About

Coach Mike Farrell (aka Boopa)
From a career in the minor leagues to nearly 30 years as an Area Scout Supervisor for the Milwaukee Brewers and the Kansas City Royals, I have sought to use the game that I love to make better players and better human beings. My goal is to teach the foundational principles that are necessary to be better both in the game and off the field. For me, it’s not something new, but rather passing on the lessons that this game and the people that I have been fortunate to be coached by have taught me.
While in professional baseball, I began teaching as my way to give back to the game. I’ve always hoped that what I teach is bigger than the game of baseball. I’ve had the fortune of coaching really good players - guys who became big leaguers. But the value isn’t about the big leaguers, it’s about the relationships and success of the guys I got to step into
the lives of.
Outside of the game, I love to cook. I enjoy playing and and spending time with my children and grandchildren.
I’m often asked often why “Boopa?” It’s what the grand babies call me, and they are the largest reason I do what I do. When Rylee (Ry), my oldest grand baby, (and I have 5 lovely Littles) was a bitty chick, I wanted to be called Big Poppa. Because well, I love it when you call me Big Poppa (throw your hands in the air…you know the song). I also liked Opa because who doesn’t want everyday to seem like a party. I would tell Ry all the time to call me one of the two names, but she managed to morph “Big Poppa” and “Opa” into Boopa, which of course stuck. It’s part of the family now, much like my passion to cook which came from my Mom and just seemed like the obvious natural place to start this journey. And, of course, when I’m bbq-ing, I often enjoy a glass of bourbon.
That’s Boopa - Baseball. BBQ. and Bourbon - and that’s
The B Spot Podcast.
